It's spider season - have you seen more creepy crawlies around?

Have you spotted more spiders popping up inside your house?

Maybe one has made itself at home in a corner, or you've noticed one scuttling across the floor?

This time of year is traditionally the start of spider season, so you might be seeing more of these eight-legged creatures around.

But why are spiders appearing now, and why do some seem to be making their way indoors?

Spider season usually starts in the UK at the end of August and goes on until mid-October or November, and during that time we tend to see more spiders in our homes.

Professor Adam Hart, from the University of Gloucestershire, knows a lot about spiders.

He told Newsround the reason why these arachnids are popping up inside buildings is because this is the time of year that male spiders become active as they look for females to mate with.

"Spider season varies a little from year to year, most likely because of the weather, but by the start of September it is usually well underway," Professor Hart added.

"The most common species we are seeing at the moment, and the ones that tend to make people jump the most, are a handful of species known as 'house spiders'. "

These are dark spiders with long legs.

House spiders are descended from species that come from warmer climates such as the Mediterranean or North Africa.

This is which is why they like living in our warm, dry homes and won't be found building webs in the garden.

While some people are afraid of spiders, it is worth knowing that there are no deadly spiders in the UK, and there are very few that even bite.

Spiders are actually important part of the ecosystem and help reduce the number of pests in the home by eating insects.

They build webs out of a sticky silk, which catches flying creatures such as flies.

But if you don't want them in the house, Professor Hart has a simple technique for getting them outside.

He recommends putting a glass over the spider and then sliding a piece of card underneath.

Then the spider can be safely transported to another building away from the home, such as a shed or a garage.
