    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 122-3

Thank you for your company and all the messages on a rather unusual day of County Championship cricket.

Here's hoping day three brings us more luck with the weather, and way more than 24.4 overs of action in the middle.

We'll be back at 10.45 BST tomorrow so rest up and we'll see you then.

  2. Close of play at the Ovalpublished at 18:50 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 122-3

Well we only had 24.4 overs of play, but they were well worth watching.

Matt Fisher struck twice in the 13 over mini-session after lunch, receiving the acclaim of thousands of children on school's day with a wonderful ball to oust Toby Albert before getting Ali Orr to miscue to mid-wicket.

Jordan Clark then pinned Nick Gubbins lbw in a sun-drenched final mini-session after 6pm, with Gubbins having played very nicely for his fourth half-century at this ground.

Surrey have a fifth bonus point of the match but Hampshire have plenty of work to do to reach 272 to avoid the follow-on on what will be an extended day three of 104 overs - weather permitting.

  3. Postpublished at 18:47 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 122-3

Jordan Clark takes the ball for the final over, trying to prise a second wicket of the mini session.

Sonny Baker defends the first ball and dabs the second to Dan Lawrence to field at short leg.

The third slides down the leg side while the fourth beats the outside edge and the fifth sails through without alarm before the final ball beats the edge.

Job done by Baker. Just about.

  4. Postpublished at 18:42 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 122-3

Reece Topley's first ball is nudged for a single by Sonny Baker.

Jake Lehmann squirts the second off to third to bring Baker back on to strike.

Topley beats the outside edge from ball three with some extra pace but Baker glances the fourth to fine leg before Lehmann nibbles at the next as it nips away from him.

The deficit is down to 299.

Final over of the day coming up.

  5. Postpublished at 18:38 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 119-3

Jake Lehmann chases a pigeon off the square ahead of Jordan Clark's latest over before picking up another first-ball single to third.

Dan Lawrence is in as a short leg for Sonny Baker but Baker can't get bat on ball as Clark beats the outside edge again.

He gets his angles right from the third delivery, playing it back to the bowler with a straight bat before ducking under the short fourth ball, successfully this time.

The fifth ball is edged down the leg side to fine leg for a single.

Two overs to go. Baker is back on strike.

  6. Postpublished at 18:34 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 117-3

Jake Lehmann cuts a single off Reece Topley's first delivery, for the third straight over, to bring Sonny Baker onto strike for potentially five balls.

He only needs one, however, as he clips neatly off his pads to deep square for a single to get off the mark and bring Lehmann back into the firing line.

The third ball is glanced off his hip by the left-hander breaks through the webbing of Ollie Pope's gloves to race to the rope for another boundary.

Topley responds by drawing a play and miss before Lehmann dabs to third for a single to move to 30*.

Topley beats the outside edge of Baker's defensive push to end the over.

    Three overs to go.

  7. Postpublished at 18:30 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 110-3

Sonny Baker tries to duck under the final ball of Jordan Clark's over but it's never high enough and thumps him on the front shoulder.

    But he's gone now...

Jordan Clark gets his revenge as Nick Gubbins plays across the line and is thumped infront of off-stump by one which straightens up off the deck.

Up goes the finger, and Gubbins trudges off feeling he might have left a few out here.

A bowling point for Surrey, however.

Sonny Baker will come in as nightwatch.

Definitely looks to be easier batting conditions with the ball doing far less than earlier.

Nick Gubbins is enjoying them. He brings up a third half-century of the season with a flashing drive through gully for another four, his ninth.

it took him 73 balls to get here.

  10. Postpublished at 18:24 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 106-2

Jake Lehmann picks up another single to third off Reece Topley's first delivery before Nick Gubbins defends the second ball back on his stumps.

Gubbins digs out a leg-stump yorker from ball three and defends off the back foot back to the bowler from the fourth.

An attempted cut from the fifth ball gets a bottom edge behind the stumps and flies to Ollie Pope's right and away for four runs taking Gubbins to 46*.

He adds another with a drive off the outside edge to third to keep the strike.

    Five overs to come.

  11. 100 runs

up for Hampshirepublished at 18:20 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 100-2

False shot from Jake Lehmann who tries an uppercut over the slips off Jordan Clark and narrowly misses the ball as it flies through to Ollie Pope.

Lehmann can't time his pull shot off the third delivery and is trickles to square leg for another dot ball.

The fourth is guided past the slips to third for a single which brings up the Hampshire 100.

Nick Gubbins allows the final two balls to glide past safely.

    Six overs to come.

  12. Postpublished at 18:17 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 99-2

Jake Lehmann rotates the strike with a single off the first ball of Reece Topley's latest over before Nick Gubbins almost chops on from the fourth ball, dragging narrowly past his leg stump as he tries to drive off the back foot.

    Heart in mouth time.

    Seven overs to come.

  13. Postpublished at 18:14 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 98-2

Jordan Clark continues from the Pavilion End but drops the second delivery in short and it's an easy cut from Nick Gubbins to the point boundary.

Gubbins has three fifties and three centuries on this ground, it's worth mentioning, and he looks very settled already.

He dabs the fourth ball to backward square for a single to reach 38* before Jake Lehmann guides to mid-wicket for another.

The final ball flies off the outside edge as Gubbins comes forward in defence, past the slips and all the way to the rope at third.

10 off the over. Gubbins onto 42*.

    Eight overs to come.

  14. Postpublished at 18:09 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 88-2

Reece Topley will replace Matt Fisher at the Vauxhall End, with Jake Lehmann on strike.

Topley is bang on the money from ball one and draws a nibble from the Australian, who then fends off the second ball up on his toes.

Topley fields the third ball in his follow through before a lovely cover drive from Lehmann from the next finds the rope to take him to 20*.

The deficit is down to 333 and this partnership is already worth 36.

    Nine overs to come.

  15. Postpublished at 18:06 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 84-2

Tricky proposition this for the Hampshire left-handed duo... what's the best they can hope for? 45 runs? No batting points, no follow-on target... if anything it's just a case of getting through this mini-session unscathed.

Nick Gubbins is in positive frame of mind and a thick edge glances the ball to the rope at third to move into the 30s.

Clark's fourth delivery moves away from Gubbins and finds the shoulder of the bat but it bounces well short of Rory Burns in the slips.

Another half-chance from the final ball as Gubbins clips off his hips in the vicinity of James Taylor at square leg who makes a good stop to save a run.

  16. Postpublished at 18:02 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 80-2

Jake Lehmann drives to the cover point boundary for a couple of runs to end Matt Fisher's over.

  17. Play resumes at the Ovalpublished at 18:00 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 78-2

    Told you we'd make it!

Jake Lehmann is on strike, in positively Australian conditions now, with Matt Fisher having two balls of his aborted over to come from the Vauxhall End.

Lehmann is 14* with three boundaries, Nick Gubbins has 29* and suffered a painful blow above the thigh pad from Jordan Clark just before the rain delay.

Thankfully we're going to get a little more cricket on this second day.

Surrey picked up a couple of wickets this afternoon.

The irony is we have blue sky and sun, so I think we'll be alright for these 11.2 overs.

Matt Fisher picked up two wickets in the 13-odd overs possible after lunch.

He has an even shorter session to make further inroads tonight, though Surrey are one wicket away from a bowling point, which will likely be their minimum aim for the day.

Blue sky, players in whites warming up on the outfield, you'd never know the chaos which came in the eight hours beforehand...

Just a shame the thousands of children who were in the ground earlier aren't still there to enjoy it.

Not long 'til bedtime, I suppose...
