The spell after tea when James Fuller clubbed 18 off four Will Jacks deliveries may have changed the course of this game, but on a spicy green track like this on the final day, who knows what might happen?

We'll be back at 10:45 BST to bring you all the thrills and spills.

  2. Close of play at the Ovalpublished at 19:09 BST

    Surrey 421 & 57-2 v Hampshire 333

From 173-6 to 333, it was some recovery from Hampshire, thanks largely to Jake Lehmann (69) and Delano Potgieter (84*).

James Fuller's explosion helped avert the threat of the follow-on while Kyle Abbott hung around to reduce the deficit to double figures before the reply was over, with Hampshire stripling their batting bonus points for the season in the process.

Abbott picked up his 30th wicket of the season to oust Rory Burns early in the reply and Fuller produced a fine caught-and-bowled to account for Will Jacks, but Surrey have a lead of 145 runs going into the final day with eight wickets in hand.

    Surrey 421 & 57-2 v Hampshire 333

Dom Sibley gets off strike from the second ball of the final over of the day, send down by James Fuller.

Matt Fisher's outside edge is beaten from the third ball but he creams a cut shot to the deep point boundary from the fourth, sending pigeons scattering.

He defends the penultimate ball and fends off the final ball rather uncomfortably, with a silly point in close quarters.

  4. Postpublished at 19:02 BST

    Surrey 421 & 52-2 v Hampshire 333

Nightwatch Matt Fisher shows some solid defence to Sonny Baker's first ball and then bounces the second back past the bowler to scamper a single, which Dom Sibley might not appreciate.

Sibley picks up a single from the fifth, suggesting he fancies the strike for the final over anyway.

Fisher digs out a full ball to end the penultimate over with the lead now 140.

  5. Postpublished at 18:58 BST

    Surrey 421 & 50-2 v Hampshire 333

Lovely straight drive from Dom Sibley, all timing, to send James Fuller to the long-on fence.

26* from 39 balls and the Surrey 50 is up.

Sibley defends the third ball solidly and gets struck in a painful region from the rising fourth - it's like he's got a magnet in there.

The fifth is defended down the track before the last is driven tamely to mid-on.

Two overs left. The lead is 138.

  6. Postpublished at 18:55 BST

    Surrey 421 & 46-2 v Hampshire 333

Sonny Baker has returned to the Vauxhall End and bangs in a short one which Dom Sibley does well to fend off for a single.

Matt Fisher gets off the mark with a couple past point and then digs out an attempted yorker from Baker to mid-on. These two could be England teammates next week, of course...

Baker bangs in another short one and thumps Fisher on the shoulder, which might help his England chances, but Fisher is okay to continue and negotiates the final ball.

The lead is 134. Three overs to come.

    Surrey 421 & 43-2 v Hampshire 333

Wicket maiden from James Fuller as Matt Fisher sees out the over.

    Jacks c & b Fuller 8 (Surrey 421 & 43-2 v Hampshire 333)

    Brilliant from James Fuller.

  9. Postpublished at 18:46 BST

Double change as Delano Potgieter takes over from Sonny Baker after his heroics with the bat.

Dom Sibley gets up on his toes to guide away for a single before Will Jacks takes a mighty hack and picks up a single into the leg side though he hardly got any of the ball.

The run of singles continues and then Jacks picks up a second from an overthrow. It's been a long day.

He adds another two with a crack to third and another single ends the over.

    Eight off the over.

    Five to come tonight.

  10. Postpublished at 18:42 BST

    Surrey 421 & 35-1 v Hampshire 333

Dom Sibley is brought onto strike by a Will Jacks single and then gets struck amidships from the second ball.

He shakes it off manfully and punches the third ball off the back foot but straight to a fielder.

He edges the next ball and it bounces in front of Ben Brown and skips past him and away for four streaky runs.

    The lead is 123.

Six overs left in the day.

    Burns b Abbott 10 (Surrey 421 & 27-1 v Hampshire 333)

Breakthrough for Hampshire... not what Surrey wanted.

Rory Burns tries to play a late cut off Kyle Abbott but gets it horribly wrong and drags on off the bottom edge and sees his middle stump smashed out of the ground.

Not a great afternoon for Burns in the field or with the bat, if truth be told.

Will Jacks is coming out at three.

  14. Postpublished at 18:25 BST

    Surrey 421 & 23-0 v Hampshire 333

Good stuff from Kyle Abbott to shape the new ball away from the edge of Dom Sibley's bat on a couple of occasions.

Sibley gets the edge on the fifth ball to pick up a single to third to move on to 11* before Rory Burns defends the final ball.

10 overs remain. Hampshire are rattling through them, given they were -3 on over-rate in the first innings.

  15. Postpublished at 18:22 BST

    Surrey 421 & 22-0 v Hampshire 333

Dom Sibley picks up a single with one off the handle from Sonny Baker into the leg side and takes his glove off briefly.

Rory Burns then gets off the mark at the 10th attempt with a lovely crack to deep square for four and then Baker strays down leg and it flicks off Burns' pad past the diving Ben Brown for four leg byes.

Burns pulls a shorter one away through square leg for a third straight boundary and despite a play-and-miss from the final ball the Surrey lead is up to 110 all of a sudden.

    11 overs remain.

  16. Postpublished at 18:17 BST

    Surrey 421 & 9-0 v Hampshire 333

Dom Sibley picks up the first boundary of the innings from the first ball with a back-foot cut through the covers and then leans on one to guide to deep square for a couple.

The fifth ball comes off the outside edge and scoots past the slips allowing a single but Rory Burns can't get the final ball away and drags onto his own thigh.

    12 overs to come tonight.

Kyle Abbott is 'fresh' from 74 minutes at the crease but still takes the new ball at the Pavilion End, with Dom Sibley on strike.

Sibley then drops a single to third to get off the mark and Rory Burns digs out the final ball.

Rory Burns is temped into a waft at Sonny Baker's second delivery and gets out of the way of a rising fourth ball which keeper Ben Brown takes above his head.

Baker beats the edge as Burns jams the bat down inside the line from the next and the watches the last ball through of a maiden first over.
