God's Heart for the Vulnerable

Spiritual reflection to start the day with Siȃn Wyn Rees, Bible Society’s Head of Wales.

Good morning.
Several years ago, I had a profound experience at a parking meter. I wonder if you have ever encountered someone quite unexpectedly, perhaps for only a few brief minutes, whose life, story, or words nevertheless left such a profound impression upon you that you have never forgotten them?

Sitting at the foot of the machine as I stood in the queue to pay, a homeless gentlemen looked up at me and said, “Hi, you’re a Christian, aren’t you?” “Er…yes, how do you know that?” I replied. “Don’t worry” he said, “I don’t want your money, I’ve already been fed three times today. It’s just that God sends me people to chat with when I get lonely.” At this point, my heart was exploding and my eyes were filling with tears, so I sat down with him at the foot of the machine and gently introduced myself. “Hi friend, I’m Sian, what’s your story?”

The Bible contains a wealth of passages that reveal God’s profound concern and compassion for those who are poor, vulnerable, and in need. It repeatedly reminds us of God’s heart for those who are marginalised and his call for us to respond to their needs with compassion, justice, and generosity. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus teaches that whenever we feed those who are hungry, offer drink to those who are thirsty, clothe those who are in need, care for the sick, and visit those who are imprisoned, we are, in effect, serving Christ Himself.

Living God, thank You for Your loving care for the poor, the lonely, and all who are vulnerable.
Help me to reflect Your love through my words and actions, trusting You to guide me in caring for others. Amen.
