Wynton Marsalis: Symphony No 1 ‘All Rise’

The opening concert of the 2026 Edinburgh International Festival; Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra, Jason Max Ferdinand Singers, Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Edinburgh Festival Chorus perform Wynton Marsalis' Symphony No. 1, with conductor James Gaffigan.

Written by Wynton Marsalis, All Rise is a monumental jazz symphony in twelve movements. It includes things Marsalis considers related to the blues; “the didgeridoo, ancient Greek harmonies and modes, New Orleans brass bands, the fiddler’s reel, clave, samba, the down-home church service, Chinese parade bands, the Italian aria, and plain ol’ down-home ditties.” Marsalis combines these sounds to transport the audience through a life; from birth to maturity via unexpected twists and turns. Join more than 200 performers on the Usher Hall stage, in Edinburgh.
